Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy

PE has the strongest evidence and support for reducing PTSD symptoms. It is a time limited treatment, typically 8-15 weekly sessions. In PE, an individual confronts safe but feared situations in a gradual manner in order to decrease distress over time. Sessions are also designed to facilitate emotional processing of the traumatic experience in order to decrease symptoms. In addition to PTSD symptoms, PE has been shown to help with depression.

Cognitive Processing Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) has more than two decades of research to show that it works to treat PTSD. CPT is time limited, 12 weekly sessions, where individuals examine and challenge unhelpful thoughts about the trauma which then facilitates improvement in both feelings and thoughts related to the trauma.

written exposure therapy

Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is a brief, 5 session, manualized exposure-based psychotherapy for PTSD that is recommended by the VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline. A growing number of studies indicate that WET is effective for PTSD, even among patients with complicated presentations and other comorbid disorders.
